New report coming soon!
Our homes are the heart of our communities and the hubs of our lives. Studies have shown that adults in the U.S. spend approximately 90% of their time indoors, much of that at home, with more than 30% of working adults working from home most or part of the time. While we have learned much over the past few decades about the environmental and social determinants of health related to built environments, these understandings have not translated into new standards and practices for the development of residential environments. We know more now than ever about how our environments can affect our health, wellness, and longevity. Lifelong Homes & Communities are thoughtfully designed with these factors in mind.
In this report, IBE presents Lifelong Homes & Communities criteria and guidance for creating homes that help us live our best lives at any age and ability. Lifelong Homes & Communities provide flexibility and adaptability with features such as wider doorways, easily operable handles and switches, good lighting, and healthy indoor air. They make life easier for everyone, especially older adults, people living with injuries or disabilities, and families with young children.
It’s time to rethink how our homes can work for us, helping us live our best lives now and in the future. IBE’s Lifelong Homes & Communities initiative offers a path forward.
