Designing, administering, and analyzing community surveys to measure awareness and action related to climate change

IBE is guiding the assessment for a new equity-driven climate change education initiative led by the City & County of Denver’s Office of Climate Action, Sustainability & Resiliency (CASR). The goal of the two-year program is to raise awareness, knowledge, and action related to extreme heat and water scarcity, and IBE is conducting community surveys to measure program effectiveness. The initiative is focused on underserved neighborhoods that are the most vulnerable to impacts from climate change, including several predominantly Spanish-speaking communities. Five Denver-based community organizations are facilitating education and outreach campaigns using the Promotoras model, in which trusted individuals empower peers through education.

IBE was hired to design, administer, and analyze surveys for the climate literacy program. In early 2023, IBE worked closely with CASR staff and the five community organizations to ensure that the surveys address their needs and concerns. The resulting baseline survey was voluntarily adopted by all five partners and lightly customized to their unique needs. IBE is designing and administering all surveys in both English and in Spanish. In Year 2, IBE will measure the change throughout the campaign in community knowledge and action related to climate change, including how campaign variables may have impacted outcomes. IBE has also developed additional metrics for organizations to track outreach successes.
